The Elusive Hand Lake

Writer's picture: Bridgett BakerBridgett Baker

I visited Hand Lake only once but I have always wanted to come back since. I took the trail to Hand Lake from Scott Lake. However, there is also another trail to Hand Lake that is a little shorter in length and is off the byway, just east of Scott Lake.

One thing to be warned of is the dense amount of mosquitos during the summer time. I had tried to take my brother out to Hand Lake but we never made it due to all the bug action he was getting. When I went in August of 2020, there was less mosquitos than the times I've been to Scott lake in June or July so perhaps if you'd like to avoid the mosquitos during your summer hikes, holding out till August may be a better option.

Hand Lake was quiet and full of animals and wild flowers. My dog loved this lake and she was able to explore off leash since we had no company around us. There is plenty of lava rock in the area that makes this spot very unique and beautiful.
